Though retirement was still a few years away, Chris wanted to get a plan in place. He talks about the benefits of working with an independent firm and how we helped him enjoy the present whilst preparing for the future.
"You want to make the most of the days you have now, as well as plan carefully for the future. Jones Hill give you space to explore what you really want."
I primarily wanted help with retirement. I’ve got to that age now, where it’s still a few years away but it’s not so very far away that I can continue to ignore it. My wife and I are the same age, and we were looking to plan how to finish off our working lives and plan financially for when we’re going to retire.
I was looking for a financial adviser specifically that charged for advice rather than selling products. The real advantage of that is that you can go in the first time and know that they’re not going to just change everything from X to Y for the sake of it. I assumed that some of the things we were doing would be right for us and there’d be no need to change them. I didn’t want to be in a situation where the professional I was approaching could only really benefit by arbitrarily changing everything.
Not being a financial professional, you tend to have an uneven knowledge. It’s not that you have great knowledge or little knowledge, but it tends to be very bumpy. For some things you’ll know what you need to know and others you won’t. Jones Hill take the time to find out where your knowledge gaps are and to fill them in a way that’s understandable and valuable to you as well.
I think it’s very easy, when you get to my age, to be focusing excessively on retirement. The point has been made: there’s 10 or 20 years of good life between then and now and you want to do both. You want to make the most of the days you have now, as well as plan carefully for the future.
Jones Hill give you space to explore what you really want. They also give you structure, so you’re not just continuing to flounder. You gradually work towards something that you’re both comfortable with as an outcome and confident in, because of the process.
