Work was making Paul stressed. He was keen to retire early but didn’t know what to do with his pensions or if he’d have enough money to live sustainably. He talks about the advice Brian gave him and the impact it had on his life and wellbeing.

"It’s really made me healthier and happier. I’m not stressed out now with work… with the sound advice that Brian gave me, I have a procedure to follow."

I was 63 and a half, doing twelve-hour shifts, getting very stressed out. My colleague and I, a couple of year’s younger than me, discussed this regularly. I said to him, “I’m going to pay for a financial adviser and get some proper advice. I might be able to afford to go early.”

I contacted Jones Hill after seeing an advert in the Wiltshire Times. I liked the advert: ‘Confused about pensions?’, yes, very confused. I rang up and got a consultation with Brian.

When I came over I thought oh dear, I might sound a bit thick. I didn’t understand anything about money. But talking to them, they gave me confidence. And, well, I excelled from there. The first day I visited Brian, he saved me money straight away. I was paying some life insurance to my bank which I didn’t require as I was adequately covered by my existing policies.

The most valuable thing is reading the cashflow plan graphs. I could understand it: if I go there, I’m going to lose that, but that’s okay, I can see that I’ll save there. It was brilliant how it was worked out. I could make my own decisions.

I was hoping to be told I could finish work a little bit earlier and not work right up to 65. This was achieved: Brian told me that yes, I was financially okay. Now I feel great, I’m really pleased with what happened. It’s really made me healthier and happier. I’m not stressed out now with work. I go careful, because obviously with money you have to, but with the sound advice that Brian gave me, I have a procedure to follow.

We’re very, very happy. I was totally unconfident: didn’t know what I was doing, totally confused about pensions and what to do. After I had a discussion with them, it was brilliant. I became confident.

It was the best thing I’ve ever done, finishing work early. I love my life and I achieved my goal. I’ve got my bus pass, I’ve got about 10 months and then I’ll get my state pension as well. Brilliant.
